Product & App Development

Custom Software Development Company

Need a web application that does more than a website can? We design and build portals, dashboards, internal tools and SaaS products around the work your users need to get done. We can start with an untested idea, take over an existing codebase or extend a product already in use. Our team works through the product decisions, interface, APIs, data and deployment together.

Sound Familiar?

Building something new or fixing what you have?

You need a first release that real people can use, with enough scope to prove the idea. See the path to production.

The original developer stopped delivering, and the next team needs to understand what already exists. See how we take over.

The platform is still working, but every change risks breaking another part of it. See application modernization.

Product Services

App development services for every stage.

  • MVP and prototype development

Test the difficult assumption, define a usable first release and decide what belongs in production.

  • Application modernization and AI code rescue

Recover the build, inspect its dependencies and tests, and improve aging or AI-generated code in stages.

  • Mobile app development

Build iOS and Android products with React Native or native code when the hardware requires it.

  • UX and product design

Clarify the user journey, interface and product decisions before development expands.

Custom Software Development

Custom software that fits how your team works.

As a custom software development company in Portland, Oregon, we start with the workflow, the people using it and the data they need to act on. Custom app development makes sense for connected systems, internal processes that have outgrown manual handoffs, or products customers will use every day. Then we define a first useful release, build the necessary interfaces and services, and test the product in the environment where it will operate. The same team can keep developing it after launch.

  • Engineers in every product decision

Architecture, interfaces and scope are considered together, before expensive dependencies form.

  • Working code, real integrations

We build the application, the API connections and the supporting tools that make the product usable.

  • A small first release

A scoping conversation establishes what is known, what needs proving and what to estimate.

Batch Geo WordPress Design
BatchGeo

Support after launch: BatchGeo since 2021.

SLIDEFACTORY has been a technical partner to BatchGeo since 2021, working across web development, cloud infrastructure, UX and platform operations. The mapping product is used by millions and includes geocoding and data-ingestion pipelines, large-scale deck.gl rendering, boundary and heat maps, marker grouping and a store-locator mode.

Across the relationship, our work has included more than 1,000 feature additions and enhancements and 200 bug resolutions. We also led an AWS migration and architecture overhaul and worked on caching and payment infrastructure. View the BatchGeo project.

Getting Started

Get a clear scope and a written estimate.

We scope each engagement around the next decision and the work needed to reach it.

Free scoping call

Tell us what the product does, what needs to change, who uses it and what has already been built. We review the starting point and prepare a written scope and estimate before development begins.

  • New product

An idea and the users who need it. We start with the assumption most likely to fail.

  • Existing application

A product in use that needs features, fixes or a new team.

  • Older platform

Aging code or dependencies that make every change risky. We plan upgrades in stages.

From First Test to Production

MVP development that tests the idea first.

MVP development
  1. 01

    Proof of concept

When the central technical question is still open, a two- to four-week fixed-scope sprint creates a working demonstration and a written go/no-go recommendation.

  2. 02

    Minimum viable product

We define one workflow that real users can complete, then build a first release around it. An MVP usually takes six to ten weeks, depending on its scope.

  3. 03

    Production

With real usage and a clearer roadmap, we add features, integrations, performance work and security improvements in stages.

  4. 04

    Continued support

We usually support a launch for one month and can continue with platform updates, maintenance and new development.

Custom Web Applications

Web application development for portals, dashboards and SaaS.

Custom web application development begins with the job the application has to do and the information moving through it, including permissions, data movement and deployment. We can build the whole product or join your development team for a defined piece of work.

  • What we build

Customer and partner portals with roles, permissions and accounts. Dashboards that combine several data sources in one view. Internal tools that replace repeated spreadsheet handoffs. SaaS products with user management and ongoing development needs. APIs and integrations that connect a product to the systems behind it.

  • What every build includes

Authentication, access rules and data boundaries agreed during scoping. Testing for the workflows the business depends on and code review before release, planned into the scope. Deployment on AWS or the hosting you already use, plus performance work and support after launch.

Take over or rescue an existing app.

A product can keep serving customers after the original developer has moved on.

The challenge is often the knowledge left behind: deployment steps, dependencies, credentials, integrations and undocumented decisions. We examine the code and current build, identify what works, and prepare a written recommendation for repair, upgrade or replacement.

When a project was developed quickly with AI tools, we also review whether the screens connect to live behavior, how access is controlled and whether tests cover important workflows. The goal is to restore a build the team can understand and change. Application modernization covers staged upgrades.

FAQs

Questions about custom software development.

What does custom software development cost?

Custom software development cost depends on the number of user roles and workflows, integrations, data migration, platforms and any compliance requirements. We produce a written scope and estimate before development begins. When feasibility is uncertain, a proof-of-concept sprint can resolve the central unknown first.

How long does a first release take?

A focused proof of concept usually takes two to four weeks. An MVP built around one usable workflow usually takes six to ten weeks. Production development continues as the product is used and the next features become clear.

Should we build a web app, mobile app or both?

A web app suits workflows people can access through a browser. A mobile app may be more appropriate for device hardware, offline use or app-store distribution. We generally use React Native for iOS and Android and choose fully native development where it is needed. See mobile app development.

Custom software or an off-the-shelf tool?

An off-the-shelf tool can work well when its built-in workflow fits the business. Custom software becomes relevant when the workflow cannot be represented in that product, the integrations need deeper control or the business needs ownership of its particular data and behavior.

Can you take over an app another team built?

Yes. We inspect the codebase, deployment, dependencies, integrations and known failures, then write down the recommended path. That may involve repairs, upgrading selected components or a broader application modernization effort.

How do you handle security, testing and hosting?

We agree on access rules, authentication and data boundaries during scoping, and plan testing for the core workflows and code review before release into the work. We deploy to AWS or the hosting you already use. For healthcare and education work, patient and student data stays on the client’s own systems.

How do you choose features for the first release?

We identify one complete workflow a real user needs, then prioritize the functionality that lets them finish it. Remaining ideas stay on the production roadmap. The first release should give the team something usable to learn from.

Who owns the code?

We hand over the completed application and its code if you request them. We can also remain involved in development and ongoing support.

What happens after launch?

Post-launch support is usually one month. Ongoing maintenance, features and platform work can continue as a separate engagement.

Can you work with our team, and do you build AI features?

We work white-label with agencies and sign an NDA on request. AI functionality can be part of a product build; see our AI consulting and development work.
