Portland Shopify Agency: When Shopify Is the Right Platform (and When It Isn’t)

Should your store be on Shopify? Usually — but not always. What Shopify development involves, what it costs, and how we decide between Shopify, WooCommerce, and custom.

Most conversations we have about ecommerce start the same way: “Should we be on Shopify?” It’s the right first question, and the honest answer is usually, but not always. Shopify is the fastest route to a store that takes payments reliably, handles tax and shipping sanely, and doesn’t wake you up at 2am. It is not automatically the right answer for every Portland business, and a Portland Shopify agency that says otherwise is selling you their comfort zone.

This guide covers what Shopify development actually involves, what it costs, and how we decide, with clients, in the open, whether Shopify, WooCommerce, or something custom is the right call.

What a Portland Shopify Agency Actually Does

“Shopify development” spans four very different kinds of work, and pricing conversations go better when everyone knows which one they’re buying:

  • Theme customization. Starting from a quality theme and tailoring design, sections, and content to your brand. The right call for most stores under a few hundred SKUs.
  • Custom theme development. A from-scratch storefront built on Shopify’s theme architecture when your brand or buying flow doesn’t fit a template. This is what most people mean when they search for custom Shopify website development services, and it’s the tier where design and conversion work start paying for themselves.
  • App and integration work. Connecting Shopify to your ERP, inventory, fulfillment, or subscriptions, plus building private apps for workflows no off-the-shelf app covers.
  • Headless builds. Shopify runs the cart and checkout while a custom front end (often the same stack we use for our custom web design work) runs the experience. Powerful, and overkill for most. See below.

Most Portland businesses that come to us for Shopify development need the first or second tier plus one or two integrations. If a proposal starts at headless, ask what problem it solves that a custom theme doesn’t.

Shopify vs. WooCommerce vs. Custom: How We Actually Decide

ChooseWhenWatch out for
ShopifySelling is the point: physical or digital products, standard checkout, you want hosting/security/PCI handledMonthly app costs stack up; deep CMS-style content is clunkier than WordPress
WooCommerceYour site is content-first with a store attached, or you already run on WordPressYou own updates, hosting, and security. The “free” platform costs maintenance
Headless / customThe buying experience itself is your differentiator, or unusual product configuration logicHighest cost, and you re-buy things Shopify gives away (previews, checkout UX, app ecosystem)

Our bias, stated plainly: if selling products is the core of the business, we recommend Shopify and spend the budget on design, conversion, and integrations, not on rebuilding checkout infrastructure Shopify has already perfected.

What Shopify Development Costs

  • Theme customization: roughly $5,000–$15,000 depending on design depth and content volume.
  • Custom theme: $15,000–$40,000 for a fully bespoke storefront.
  • Integrations and private apps: scoped per project. A simple fulfillment hookup is days; a two-way ERP sync is a project of its own.
  • Migrations (from WooCommerce, Magento, Squarespace, or an aging custom store): $5,000–$20,000, driven mostly by catalog complexity, URL/redirect volume, and how much history you need to keep.

Plus Shopify’s own subscription and payment fees, which are public on their pricing page. If a proposal doesn’t separate design, development, and migration line items, ask why.

The Migration Question: Keeping Your SEO Intact

The most common way a migration goes wrong has nothing to do with the new store. It’s the old URLs. Every product, collection, and blog URL that changes needs a redirect, or the search rankings you spent years building evaporate in a weekend.

Our migration process starts with a full URL inventory and redirect map before any design work begins, the same discipline we apply to SEO work generally. If you’re interviewing Portland Shopify agencies, make “walk me through your redirect process” one of your questions. The answer is revealing.

What a real answer sounds like: a crawl of the existing site, a line-by-line map of old URL to new URL, a plan for the ones that have no equivalent, and a post-launch check on Search Console to catch what the map missed. What a weak answer sounds like: “Shopify handles redirects.”

Why Work with a Local Portland Team

Plenty of good Shopify work happens remotely, and we do plenty of it ourselves. But for Portland businesses there’s real value in a team you can sit down with: workshops at the whiteboard, photography coordinated locally, and an agency that knows the local market your customers live in.

We’re on Belmont in Portland at 4520 SE Belmont St, Suite 300, and ecommerce projects sit alongside our web design, SEO, and AI development practices. That matters when your store needs to be more than a template.

How to Shortlist a Shopify Agency in Portland

If you’re comparing shops, four questions do most of the sorting:

  1. Which tier of work are you quoting? Theme customization and a custom build are different products at different prices. A quote that doesn’t say which one you’re getting isn’t a quote.
  2. Walk me through your redirect process. Covered above, and still the fastest way to tell an experienced migration team from an optimistic one.
  3. What would make you tell us not to use Shopify? Any Shopify agency in Portland can list Shopify’s strengths. The useful answer is the one where they name a scenario they’d turn down.
  4. Who maintains it after launch? Apps update, themes drift, and a store nobody owns degrades quietly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Shopify build take?

Theme customization: 4–8 weeks. Custom themes and migrations: 8–16 weeks depending on catalog size and integrations. Add time if product photography and copy don’t exist yet. Content is the most common schedule risk, not code.

Can Shopify handle B2B, subscriptions, or digital products?

Yes to all three, with the right configuration and apps. B2B pricing tiers, recurring billing, and digital delivery are all well-trodden paths. The work is in choosing the right approach for your catalog rather than stacking apps until the margin disappears.

We’re on WordPress and like it. Should we still move our store to Shopify?

Not necessarily. If your content lives happily on WordPress, a WooCommerce store or a WordPress-plus-Shopify split (content on one, checkout on the other) can be the pragmatic answer. This is exactly the conversation to have before anyone writes a proposal.

Do you work with businesses outside Portland?

Yes. Local clients get the whiteboard sessions and the coordinated photography; remote clients get the same process over video. The work is identical, the logistics aren’t.

What happens to our rankings after a migration?

With a complete redirect map, expect a short dip and a recovery within weeks. Without one, expect a drop that takes months to rebuild, if it comes back at all.

Thinking about a new store or a migration? Start with our Shopify development services page, or talk to us directly. We’ll tell you honestly whether Shopify is the right platform before we talk about building anything, and you can see our work while you decide.
